I offer developmental editing support for academics working on journal articles and book projects. I help writers with the big picture details of complex texts, such as argument, evidence, structure, and style.

Scholars who work on complex projects for many years can:

  • Find that they’ve lost track of what they’re arguing, or maybe never quite figured out what they were arguing.
  • Struggle to arrange evidence and analysis in an order that helps the reader follow their thinking.
  • Be uncertain about how to keep a reader’s attention on the page with engaging, accessible prose.

I can relate. It took me two years after I had finished writing my dissertation to realize what I was arguing and how to argue it! Most scholars don’t have two years to figure it out. My aim is to help you find the shape of your writing project at the pace that you need, and to provide actionable advice to edit your manuscript.

Developmental editing is most useful when you have written an initial, mostly complete draft but haven’t submitted any materials to a publisher, or when you have an accepted proposal and are preparing a manuscript for peer review, or when you are revising a manuscript after peer review. I do not offer book coaching.

I offer a rate of USD $100/hour. In the past I’ve worked on journal articles, books, dissertation-to-book projects, artist statements, grant proposals, and academic job market materials. Depending on the nature of your manuscript, its length, and the editing focus you need, an 8,000-word journal article may take 6 hours to edit (USD $600), while an 80,000-word manuscript may take 25-30 hours to edit (USD $2500-$3000). Please get in touch to discuss your writing project with me in a free 20-minute exploratory call.
